Respect Your Youngers

You’ve surely heard the expression, “Respect your elders,” but have you heard anyone say “Respect your youngers”?

Respect your “youngers” came to me because both of my sons recently visited, and I was reflecting upon how much I learn from them.

I think it is important to not only respect our elders, but to also respect the younger generations. The young people today have such fascinating ideas and their views of the world are so different from those of the older generations.

How can we respect our youngers? By being genuinely interested in them, asking them questions, and listening to them with open minds. As I told my older son last week, “Even if I don’t always agree with you guys, I still love to hear what you think about everything. Our conversations are so interesting. You make me so woke!”

On the world stage, we see a brilliant example of a very aware young person, the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg… You can watch a three-minute video of her speaking here: Greta.

And, as I quoted in my post “Yoda, Thich Nhat Hanh, & Winnie-the-Pooh,” in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Master Yoda said, “Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters.”

Indeed, I believe there is wisdom in seeing that the younger generations grow beyond us, no matter how wise we may think we are! True wisdom contains a natural humility within it. When we respect what young people have to say, we model wisdom and humility.

Does this post resonate with you? Do you know any “youngers” who help wake you up?

Activate Your Greening Power with Hildegard of Bingen!

Awaken the holy fire of creativity within you, while deepening your spiritual connection with the Earth, through reading about the life and teachings of Hildegard, a bold 12th century German Rhineland mystic, prophet, healer, writer, and musician. Matthew Fox’s book Hildegard of Bingen: A Saint for Our Times: Unleashing Her Power in the 21st Century is alive with her strong spirit. This powerful Benedictine sister was declared a Saint and Doctor of the Church (Roman Catholic) in 2012.

Hildegard (1098-1179) was on fire with love for the Earth. She passionately invited others to wake up and join her in praise consciousness. Fox says that she was constantly getting back to “greening power.” He writes, “She even talks about the Holy Spirit as being green, like a green sap inside all of us. We are like trees, she says, and the Holy Spirit is the capacity for juiciness, greenness, and moistness.” He continues, “Hildegard teaches that the only sin in life is drying up. She wrote this to bishops and abbots, telling them they were drying up, and they should get outdoors more, doing whatever it takes to stay “wet and green and moist and juicy” – in other words, creative.”

Perhaps Hildegard has returned to Earth again as the passionate spirit in the young Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg.

Drawing from phrases in Fox’s book, including some of Hildegard’s words, I created a visualization with guided imagery to help you wake up your greening power. I hope you enjoy it. Please share your experience in the comments below down where it says “Leave a Reply.”

Happy Spring Equinox!
May All Beings Passionately Love This Earth!

Visualization for Waking Up Your Greening Power

Settling in… and getting comfortable… breathing naturally… and allowing effortless relaxation to flow, from your head… down to your toes… and imagining yourself in a garden… walking along the path… hearing the bees buzzing… feeling the sunlight on your face… gazing at the beauty of earth’s greenings… and deeply inhaling the scent of all the flowers and herbs as you walk along… basil… calendula… lavender… oregano… purslane… parsley… nettle… rose… sage… thyme… spearmint… violet… yarrow… dandelion… rosemary… and wild strawberries… and tasting anything you like as you journey deeper into this green, alive garden… delighting in the honeybees on the flowers… attuning to the stones along the path… and finding a nice warm rock to sit down on to rest… with your back against a tree… feeling the support of the warm rock beneath you… and the strong tree behind you…

… and taking some time to settle in even more deeply… loving your body… loving life itself… opening spaces to experience the divine, the inner mystic… feeling nature’s aliveness and greening power… awakening your senses… rising from any lukewarmness to live with passion and with blood… praising existence… praising our glorious planet Earth… joining your praise with the praise from the whole of nature… the blowing wind, the mild, moist air, the exquisite greening of trees and grasses… finding your voice… your greening power… your juicy creativity… and hearing the universes vibrating with music and melody… feeling the sacredness of all beings… hearing the gifts of sun, moon, stars, and all the green things that grow on the earth… luminous and fiery… radiating life-light… the aroma of holy work… the blossoms flourishing with ripening fruits… the holy stones…

…. Falling in love with all of creation… getting juice from viriditas, the greening power, the life force… on fire with the living light… the taste of the wild… the music of the spheres… listening to nature… to the silence… and to what breaks the silence… the birds singing their unique songs… the squirrels dashing… the trees talking… and hearing the grasses growing… and the flowers exuding their colors and fragrances… the perfume of Spring on the breeze… and listening to the stones… and imagining a small being in your hands… a leaf, a stone, a feather, a flower, or an herb… holding it and asking it to tell you of its story… of its being… of its holy existence… and through it, inviting a mystical love of the cosmos… of the Earth… of all Earth’s creatures and beings… and letting this love wash over you… cleansing and exciting your soul… and returning to your day feeling relaxed and refreshed…
