Bells of Mindfulness

It was a lovely autumn evening and all was well… It felt wonderful to breathe in the cool fresh air… But then, once again the neighbors’ cigarette smoke began wafting in on the breeze… With anger I closed my window… and then, once again the toilet paper holder fell to the floor… and then, I stepped in water in my socks… and with each small frustration, I felt my angst growing stronger…

And once again the negative thinking swirl began, with the primary question surfacing, “Why is life so hard?” But just then, a small gentle voice asked quietly, “Umm, could we reframe that?” So I tried and tried to think of a more positive spin on my view of life (in that frustrated moment), but all I could come up with was “life is challenging” and “life is not fun.”

Well the small gentle voice was not having those negative reframes, so she dug deeper into the situation, and then she shared this insightful reframe:

“Life is filled with bells of mindfulness.”

Yes! All parts of me agreed, and the toxic angry vibes lay down to rest with the cranky despairing energies…

So then the small gentle voice said calmly, “When you closed the window in anger, that was a bell of mindfulness to show you where you need to cultivate more peace, understanding, compassion, and kindness… And, when the holder fell down and you stepped in water in your socks, those were bells of mindfulness to show you where you need to generate more calm inside yourself. So remember, life is filled with bells of mindfulness.”

Dear readers, this experience arose in me because I have been studying the teachings of the Zen Buddhist Master, Thich Nhat Hanh… His teachings on mindfulness are so simple to grasp, integrate, and practice in daily life… Soon I will write a post about his book Peace is Every Step.

And so what about you… Can you relate to my experience here? Can you also see many bells of mindfulness in your life?

I hope this post was helpful to you!

StarFire Teja’s StarFire Friday Blessing: May Your Light Shine!

May you feel your goodness.

May you practice loving kindness towards yourself.

May your weekend be blessed with peace, inspiration, and laughter.

May your light shine!

In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus said, “If anyone asks, “Where do you come from?” tell them, “We came from the light, from the place where the light came into being of its own accord.”

And, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works…”

This weekend I will be busy reviewing the proof copy of my new book, Reaching for Orange: Practices, Visualizations, & Blessings to Help You Happy Up Your Life, so I will see you back here on Monday…

Happy Weekend to you!
Let your light shine!

Love Thy Neighbor

Do you ever feel bothered by your neighbors? If so, perhaps you will be able to relate to my story here…

My intention is to send loving good vibes to my neighbors, even when – no, especially when – they do insensitive things that affect me negatively. However, when their carcinogenic cigarette smoke, toxic lighter fluid fumes, heart-breaking smells of dead animal flesh cooking, and offensive sounds of foul language all waft on the nice breeze across the property line and in through my open window, my best intentions are seriously challenged.

As I close the window, I feel irritation and anger that once again I cannot get fresh air and hear the lovely birdsong. I know that the negative energies arising in me are not healthy for me, and I do believe that energies radiate out to others. But, it is one thing to understand the energetic principles involved, and a whole other thing to be able to practice loving kindness in the moment of feeling triggered.

If you also feel challenged by your neighbors, here are a few practices that can help you to find equanimity, love, and compassion…

At the moment you first feel triggered, pause and witness your emotions with loving attention. Breathe, and cultivate compassion for yourself first. Next, remind yourself that the other person is doing the best they can with the light that they have to see by. They probably are not even aware that their behavior is bothering you. In fact, they might even feel bad if they knew that they were causing you grief.

Try to let go of any judgments you may be feeling towards them. And finally, send them love, compassion, peace, and healing energies. Notice how much better you feel after doing that. Kindness and compassion transform you, and they feel so much better than irritation and anger.

I hope this post was helpful to you.

StarFire Teja’s Three Tips for Strengthening Your Immune System

Crazy weather patterns can challenge your immune system, but there are many things you can do to stay healthy.

1. Handwashing ~ Washing your hands is the single most effective way to stop spreading germs. It helps you to stay healthy, and it is an act of kindness to everyone around you. Proper handwashing includes four elements: warm water, soap, 15-20 seconds of friction, and thoroughly drying with a towel. So remember:

2. Affirmations ~ Try saying this affirmation to yourself anytime you feel “on the edge” of “something”… “I have faith in my immune system.” This is a good one to say at times when you might feel nervous about catching something, such as when you’re eating with someone who did not wash their hands (and you don’t have the nerve to say something), or when you’re in a store and someone near you is coughing and sneezing. In such situations, calmly think to yourself “I have faith in my immune system.”

3. Strengthening the protective shield around your energy field ~ Begin by intending to create a force field around your energy field. You can gently push away any “other” energies with your hands, and then intend that there be a strong protective shield around you. You can imagine this force field filling up with mantras, blessings, and presences of protective beings (in alignment with your religion or other cosmic belief system). Spend a few minutes each morning and/or each evening doing this practice, and your immune system will strengthen. (This is one of many practices described in the Radiance Rising section at the beginning of my new book, The Tejaswini Ramayana: The Way of Rama in the Shakahara StarFire Universes.)

Being happy also helps the immune system, as explained in a previous blog “Protection Prayer When Grieving”… So anything you can do to Happy Up will strengthen your immune system. For that, see this previous blog “StarFire Teja’s Ten Tips for Happy-ing Up During the Wintertime Blues.”
