Monday Morning Musings on Strength

“… the strength of his devotion and fortitude, like some sturdy bull, drove him forward.”

~ Tulasidasa describing Rama’s brother, Bharata, in his Ramayana, Shri Ramacharitamanasa, edited and translated by R.C. Prasad.

Dear readers,

Welcome to yet another bizarro week on planet Earth! This morning I’m thinking about Strength. The quote above inspires me to cultivate Fortitude.

Fortitude.

That is a great word for our current times! Just hearing the word makes me think of iron bars, charging bulls, and this cup of strong black coffee beside me.

As I sip (and thoroughly enjoy), this cuppa, I am using mental powers, somewhere between fortitude and mojo, to ignore the morning aches of Fibromyalgia and focus on writing this post for you. I am imagining that many of you are also forging through some pains, whether they be physical, mental, or emotional, in order to do some work this day. Are you finding surprising new levels of inner strength inside yourself?

Here’s another musing on strength… A few nights ago I showed my Mom a post by Lowe’s, in which they stressed only one person per trolley in their stores, and my Mom started reading the comments below the post… Well, this one guy was very angry in expressing his complaints, and a fellow shopper replied to him sternly, saying “Buck up, buttercup” to which he softened and admitted that he was having a really hard time with lots of woes, including losing his job…

It is easy to get angry and complain… It is a lot harder to be vulnerable and admit that you’re afraid you won’t be able to feed your family. It takes a lot of inner strength to be honest like that.

My final musing for this post is about how going out walking in the hood feels like a war zone now… It feels like I’m watching out for snipers (human beings) who might be carrying protein molecules (viruses) in their pockets… or worse, in their nostrils! Just going for a simple walk to see the flowering trees and hear the singing birds takes a lot of inner strength these days. You gotta be watching all the time to make sure you don’t come within six feet of one of those human creatures!

Thanks for visiting the StarFire Temple of Happiness. I hope you enjoyed this post!

May you stay strong, with fortitude of mind!

With happy coffee vibes,

Last Fire

Dear readers,

We never know when we might be having our last conversation, sipping our last cuppa coffee, or lighting our last fire… For this reason, the wise sages advise us to keep death always close to our minds. This may seem like a morbid, negative teaching, but actually the essence of the teaching is for us to live life positively, with joy and with zest!

The fire in the photo with this post was one of the last fires my Dad lit, a couple of months before he died. It was a joyous time, with family gathered around… He loved making fires, but he did not know that that fire was to be one of his last…

I have fire on the brain today, because yesterday I met with my psychologist and she suggested that I write my Dad a letter about my guilt and regrets with him, and then burn the letter so that the ashes and smoke will take the written words to him in the spirit realms.

Soon I will write that letter and then burn it in his beloved fire pit. I may cry when I do that ritual, or maybe I will smile in gratitude for all the fires and cups of coffee and conversations I got to enjoy with him during the past two years. (Btw, I had thought that being a boomeranger at my age was so terrible, but now it seems like a blessing because I got to live with him for the last two years of his life.)

Dear ones, try to be so grateful for the beloved people in your life… And try to enjoy each moment with as much zest as you can muster!

With gratitude and fire sparks,

A Tool for Chronic Pain and Anxiety: Focus On Your Feet

Are you dealing with chronic pain or anxiety? If you experience pain on any level (physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual), or if you struggle with anxiety, you can try this simple tool and see if it helps:

Focus on your feet.

The feet are the farthest away from the brain, and the brain is what perceives pain and creates anxiety… So, bringing your awareness down to your feet can really calm your mind and soothe your nerves.

Anytime you feel pain or anxiety increasing, think to yourself (or say out loud), “Focus on my feet.” Bring your full awareness down to your feet and notice how your feet feel… Imagine breathing in and out of your feet… Imagine that your feet are becoming very warm and very heavy… Feel the soles of your feet and imagine that they are glowing in a bright golden light… Notice any changing sensations in your feet as you focus on them…

The nice thing about this tool is you can use it anytime, anywhere. You can focus on your feet during a stressful business meeting, or while standing in the grocery line, or while driving. Anytime you feel hyped up, during the day or the night, you can simply focus on your feet.

I hope this tool is helpful to you or to someone you love. Please share your experiences in the comments below.

Please note: If you have pain in your feet, then you will probably wish to focus on your hands or belly instead of your feet.

May All Beings Be Free of Suffering.
May All Beings Be Happy!

Photo* of Teja’s feet taken on a barefoot hike last Easter Sunday in Audubon Woods, Henderson, Kentucky. It was my first barefoot hike of the year, and unfortunately the last… I did go barefoot in the yard for another month or so, but before I could get out on another hike, the season turned to muggy and buggy, so now I have to wait on barefoot hiking until the Fall!

Enter the Green Sphere

Do you have any heavy feelings that you would like to dissolve? Are you feeling dense on any level?

I created the following visualization with guided imagery to help dissolve any physical, mental, or emotional pains you may be experiencing now. It will especially help to ease any tight feelings in your chest or gut.

Read the visualization out loud in a soft, soothing tone of voice. Then close your eyes, breathe naturally, and place one hand on your heart and the other hand on your belly. Allow yourself to simply feel what you feel. Please share any questions or comments here, down below where it says “Leave a Reply.”

Visualization to Dissolve Heaviness on Any Level

Settling in… getting really comfortable… breathing naturally… and allowing effortless relaxation to flow, from your head… down to your toes… and traveling out into space… somewhere out in the universes… in the fields of stars… and arriving at a temple made of blue crystals… in the center of the temple there is an emerald green sphere… enter the sphere and sit inside it…

… sitting in the emerald green sphere… in the center of the temple made of blue crystals… out in the stars… tuning in to any feelings and sensations… and noticing any images… scents… sounds… tastes… really feeling… and opening to the crystal energies… the healing light… noticing any places in your body or mind or heart that feel tense… allowing the healing crystalline energies to lighten any tension… feeling the tension dissolving… feeling the heaviness becoming light… allowing the density to lighten… feeling yourself healing and relaxing in that light…

… and then coming back out of the green sphere… leaving the blue crystal temple… traveling back through the stars… through the lightness of space… and coming back down fully into your body… feeling connected with the sacred Earth beneath you… and feeling centered and grounded in your being…
