Guided Imagery for Chronic Pain

Do you have any chronic physical or emotional pains? If yes, the guided imagery in this post may help you.

Visualizing the element of fire is a powerful tool. You can do this simple practice anytime, anywhere. When you feel physical or emotional pain, first cultivate the witness, by saying to yourself, “there is some pain passing through me.” Affirm that you are bigger than the pain… see that you are the consciousness which is watching the pain.

Next, visualize a fire burning brightly. See the colors of the flames, hear the crackling, smell the aroma of smoke, and feel the healing warmth… Now imagine that your pain is burning in that fire… And if you have any emotional reactions to the pain, let those also burn in the flames…

Here is the variation that I have been saying to myself daily, and you can tailor this to your individual religion or cosmic belief system…

“I am Shiva Consciousness, and Shiva’s Fire is burning in my whole being… And everything that is not Shiva Consciousness, like emotional and physical pain, is burning in Shiva’s Fire and is being transmuted into the Highest Love Vibrations.”

When we feel like we love everyone and everything, that is when we are in the Highest Love Vibrations… And it is possible to feel that extraordinary love for everyone and everything, even when we are in chronic pain. It simply takes a few minutes of awareness and practice. You can do this simple practice many times throughout the day or night.

Enter the Green Sphere

Do you have any heavy feelings that you would like to dissolve? Are you feeling dense on any level?

I created the following visualization with guided imagery to help dissolve any physical, mental, or emotional pains you may be experiencing now. It will especially help to ease any tight feelings in your chest or gut.

Read the visualization out loud in a soft, soothing tone of voice. Then close your eyes, breathe naturally, and place one hand on your heart and the other hand on your belly. Visualization to Dissolve Heaviness on Any Level

Settling in… getting really comfortable… breathing naturally… and allowing effortless relaxation to flow, from your head… down to your toes… and traveling out into space… somewhere out in the universes… in the fields of stars… and arriving at a temple made of blue crystals… in the center of the temple there is an emerald green sphere… enter the sphere and sit inside it…

… sitting in the emerald green sphere… in the center of the temple made of blue crystals… out in the stars… tuning in to any feelings and sensations… and noticing any images… scents… sounds… tastes… really feeling… and opening to the crystal energies… the healing light… noticing any places in your body or mind or heart that feel tense… allowing the healing crystalline energies to lighten any tension… feeling the tension dissolving… feeling the heaviness becoming light… allowing the density to lighten… feeling yourself healing and relaxing in that light…

… and then coming back out of the green sphere… leaving the blue crystal temple… traveling back through the stars… through the lightness of space… and coming back down fully into your body… feeling connected with the sacred Earth beneath you… and feeling centered and grounded in your being…

Staying Well With Guided Imagery

“Working its magic deep inside your body… moving with deliberate intelligence to the hidden places where pain and disappointment are stored… right to the center of the heaviness… and feeling the spaces loosen and lighten as you breathe into them… sensing the beginnings of energy awakening… old sparks returning…”

That passage appears in “Depression Imagery” in an excellent book called Staying Well With Guided Imagery: How to Harness the Power of Your Imagination for Health and Healing* by Belleruth Naparstek. Later in that section she writes, “attuned once more to the brightness of your own being…”

In addition to the imagery for relieving depression, in this book you will find guided imagery to help with anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, grief, physical pain, high blood pressure, immune system disorders, headaches, allergies (whether they appear in the respiratory system, the digestive tract, or the skin), emotional issues, spiritual and energetic support, and more.

In only 216 pages you will become your own expert on how to gently heal yourself using guided imagery, which the author explains as “any perception that comes through any of the senses. That means sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel.” She also highlights that in order for your guided imagery to be most effective, first you need to access an altered state in which you are both relaxed and focused, and then feel the images as sensations in your body in a multi-sensory way.

One of my favorite parts in this book is when Belleruth explains how any images in the mind, including memories, are real events to the body. She describes this through the beautiful example of remembering being on Gramma’s lap: “As far as your body is concerned, regardless of intervening years, age, or pounds, while you’re remembering all that rich, sensory detail, you’re still on Gramma’s lap. And whatever profound emotional nourishment you got there is yours to have again. Whatever neurohormones, or chemical messengers, went coursing through your bloodstream as you sat on Gramma’s lap, sending happy-to-be-alive white blood cells all through your body, these same substances get activated again. As far as your body is concerned, Gramma is forever available to love and sustain you. And so with any sweet memories…”
