The Sweetness of “Stay Safe”

“Just as mother keeps her child from harm, and guards him with her life, so you should treasure all living beings with a grateful heart, spreading love throughout the world. Protect everyone, everywhere, from hatred, and radiate kindness in all directions.”

~ from the Buddhist Doctrinal Formulas, as translated by Richard Hooper in his book, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, and Lao Tzu: The Parallel Sayings.

Dear readers,

During this strange sci-fi-ish virus pandemic quaran-time reality, have you noticed that everywhere you turn someone is saying “Stay safe”?

I am so touched by the sweetness of those two words. It feels like people are really caring about each other; like they sincerely wish safety and protection for others. This is like a sparkling jewel of tenderness emerging from humanity.

May all living beings be protected from viruses of all kinds, including the virus of hatred and the virus of torturing and killing innocent animals for food.

May all living beings be free of suffering!
May all living beings be happy and kind!

Let’s all stay safe and send love out in all directions!

With a grateful heart,

Awakening Compassion for the Animals, Fish, and Birds

As an eight-year-old child on a small Indiana farm, I loved all of our animals, but when I watched chickens and rabbits being killed, I did not make the connection that they were living beings just like the pet cats I loved so much. There was a disconnect, and I did not make that connection until almost thirty years later while sitting in meditation.

Compassion for the animals, fish, and birds arises at different times for different people.

I lived through that complete disconnect so I understand it, and I have compassion for it…

And, I am inspired to write posts that bring awareness to how much the creatures of the land, sea, and air are suffering… The animals, fish, and birds are living beings who have complex emotional lives and families, just like humans, cats, and dogs. They are being tortured on a massive scale, and so I pray that more and more humans will awaken to higher levels of compassion for all beings.

With each person who chooses the plant-based diet and the vegan lifestyle, the suffering of the animals, fish, and birds is reduced.

A sitting meditation practice can help to awaken compassion. While sitting up straight with eyes closed, visualize cows, pigs, lambs, fish, chickens and turkeys. See how they are living, breathing beings who need protection so they can live their lives in freedom. See how they are living on this sacred Earth with human beings – not for human beings. See how loving and precious they are!

May All Beings Be Free of Suffering.
May All Beings Live in Freedom and Happiness!

With love and compassion for all beings,

Monday Morning Musings on Protection

Do you ever pray for protection, for yourself or for your loved ones? If so, how do you say those prayers, and how do you imagine they are answered?

My first musing this morning is about praying for protection, and what that really means. For example, God’s protection does not always mean protection from harm, because just look at all the terrible things that happen to people!

When we pray to God, or Spirit, or the Universe, or a Force in Nature (or however else you might conceptualize Something Greater beyond yourself), if we pray for protection only from harm, then we may find ourselves disappointed (or even devastated) when some harm comes our way. So we have to go deeper, to ask for what we might truly need in any given situation…

A while back I was feeling afraid when I was home alone one night, and I was praying for protection, and that is when I realized that deeper than asking for protection from harm is asking for protection from fear

My next musing is about what happens when we ask for protection from fear… When we are protected from fear, then even if the worst thing we imagine happens, we will be able to stay in the highest love vibration, trusting the unfolding of Life.

So if the worst thing happens, we may die, or we may survive and heal, or we may survive but be shattered and unable to heal the wound. Regardless of the outcome, if the worst thing happens, the best thing we can do is to accept it and to trust that it was meant to be as part of the unfolding of Life.

My last musing is about applying this concept to our prayers for others… Typically, when we ask for the protection of our loved ones we do so because we feel afraid of something bad happening to them. However, our worries, anxieties, and fears do not help the other people, and may even cause them harm, so again, when we pray for their protection, the deeper prayer is really about protecting them from both our fears and their own fears.

Perhaps when I pray for the protection of my two sons what actually happens is an energetic force arises from the depths of my being and shoots out like a missile into their energy fields and protects them from any potential ill effects that might be created from their Mom’s fears and worries!

So the deeper prayer would be for me to ask for them and me to be protected from all fears… and for us all to trust in the unfolding of Life.

Dear reader, can you relate to these musings?

Protection Prayer When Grieving

Did you know that you need a little extra protection when you are feeling sad? Your energy field and your immune system are more susceptible to outer influences when you are grieving.

Jacob Liberman, in his book Take Off Your Glasses and See, writes “When we are happy, our immune system feels happy and works with relish, and when we are sad, our immune system is depressed and far less energetic…. prolonged depression can weaken the immune system, and… happiness can be a powerful healing agent.”

As I have written in previous blog articles, we can choose to be happy. Per the Upanishads (a collection of wisdom by the ancient mystics of India), the mind is the means to happiness. We really can decide to be happy. This doesn’t necessarily happen immediately, but if you regularly tell yourself that you are choosing to be happy, then over time it will become true for you.

And, even the happiest people still have sad times. Grief is an integral part of the human condition. It is the inevitable reality of life that other people die and anything may change unexpectedly at anytime. So, knowing that happiness is better for the immune system, and also knowing that some sadness is inevitable, my solution is to pray for protection when grieving. This prayer that I say might be helpful to you also the next time you are grieving.

“Dear God, Please protect me from all harm while this grief is passing through me. May this grief purify my mind and my heart. Through this sadness may I be healed on every level. May I be open to more Love and Compassion.”

May you be protected when grieving. May you be open to the Love and Compassion that sadness can bring.
