Guided Imagery to Relieve Teeth Grinding

Whether or not you grind your teeth, you can enjoy the relaxation benefits of the visualization in this post.

A couple of days ago I went to the dentist for my six-month cleaning and exam. I love my dentist and his assistant. They are both very warm, caring, knowledgeable, and really outstanding in their work. The dentist recommended that I get a mouth guard, due to nighttime teeth grinding, to prevent cracking any teeth. Since that will probably not be covered by my insurance, I asked how long I could wait to do that, and he said it should be done in 2020.

At the end of the visit I gave the dentist a copy of my new book, Reaching for Orange: Practices, Visualizations, & Blessings to Help You Happy Up Your Life, and he held the book up to his forehead and said, “I see a mouth guard in your future!” I’m still laughing about that one, and I am filled with gratitude that I found such a wonderful dentist here!

So, until that mouth guard appears in my future, I will be practicing visualizations with the intention to relieve at least some, if not all, of the nighttime teeth grinding. The past two nights I did visualizations at bedtime, and I did not wake up with that tight feeling in my teeth, so I have hope that this practice will be helpful. I am sharing some guided imagery with you below, in case you or someone you know might also need to relieve some teeth grinding.

The key to this visualization is the repetition, and the slower you read it the better. Read it out loud in a very soft, soothing tone of voice, and slow your pace down even more during the repetitive parts. Feel free to change any of the words to words that resonate more deeply for you. And, if you are not a teeth grinder, you may wish to change the parts about the mouth and jaw to other body areas such as the heart and belly.

The guided imagery exercise below is not meant to replace standard dental care. If your dentist recommends a mouth guard, please follow that advice in conjunction with practicing the visualization.

And, please do not ever practice guided imagery relaxation exercises while driving a vehicle!

And so… settling in now for your restful time… your time to be by yourself… to let go of the outside world for a while… settling in… deeper and deeper into your inside world… breathing in comfort… and breathing out all tension… feeling surrounded by safety and protection… drifting down… deeper and deeper relaxed… breathing in calm… and breathing out all tension… Letting go…

… feeling the support of the surface beneath you… feeling held and supported… held… and supported… held… and supported… waves of relaxation now flowing… from your head… down to your toes… and noticing that your hands are becoming very warm and very heavy… and your feet are becoming very warm and very heavy… your whole body beginning to feel calm and still… drifting down… and a pathway opens… through your mind… into a forest…

… and a pathway opens… through your mind… into a forest… and a pathway opens… through your mind… into a forest… and arriving in the center… of your reality… and arriving in the center… of your reality… and arriving in the center… of your reality… and walking through the trees… feeling warmth… seeing a mountain ahead… a mountain made of Violet Fire…

… and above the violet flames, a copper bridge over the mountain… and feeling an invitation to lie down on the copper bridge… lying on the warm healing copper… Stars above… Violet Fire below… relaxing on the warm copper… body calming… mind calming… mouth calming… jaw calming… letting go… relaxing and calming… calming and relaxing…

… relaxing your jaw… relaxing your mouth… relaxing your mind… relaxing your body… deeper and deeper relaxed… letting go… calming your mouth… calming your jaw… mouth calming… jaw calming… mouth and jaw remaining calm and still while you sleep… while you dream… while you wake… calm mouth… calm jaw… calm and still… calm and still… calm and still…

… feeling the stillness deep in your center… and now… if it is bedtime, drifting into peaceful sleep… but if it is not yet bedtime, then slowly and gently returning to the outside world, feeling calm and relaxed…

Snake Medicine: Shedding Old Skins

Have you ever held a snake?

The photo* with this post is from five years ago when I had the opportunity to hold a boa constrictor. Well, it slithered around my body, so I did not feel like I held it, but rather, it felt like the snake was holding me!

I had never even touched a snake before, so I had no idea what to expect, and I was very surprised by my experience. When the snake was first placed on me, my whole body immediately relaxed and I fell into a deep state of consciousness that I can only describe as pure bliss. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that relaxed. All thoughts stopped and I just kept repeating the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya.”

“Om Namah Shivaya” literally means “I bow to Shiva, who is Pure Consciousness. I bow to my own deepest self, which is Pure Consciousness.” Shiva is the destroyer aspect of God in the Hindu trinity, and he wears venomous serpents as ornaments to symbolize that he is the conqueror of death. Essentially that means that his consciousness is so pure that he has no fears, like of death by cobra, for example. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I wear a gold snake ring (on my wedding ring finger) to symbolize that I am married to Shiva. Well, I held my ring up to show the snake, and that snake actually licked my ring!

My experience with that snake felt like such a blessing. Feeling that physical surrender in my body taught me how to access a deeper peace on all levels.

Snake medicine also brings peace because it shows us humans how to shed our old skins. Do you have some layers that you need to shed? Do you have any mental, emotional, or spiritual energies that are no longer serving your highest good?

Here is a simple practice for transmuting any old energies and shedding any old skins: Sit quietly and watch your natural breathing. Visualize a snake slithering around your body, and imagine that the snake is absorbing anything you would like to shed now, such as fears, disappointments, and so on. Next see the snake going away from you into a green field, and watch the snake shedding that old skin which contains all that you wish to shed… See the snake shedding your old skins! Conclude with three breaths to transmute the old energies. Breathing in peace, breathing out the old… Breathing in peace, breathing out the old… Breathing in peace, breathing out the old…

When you let go of the idea that you are doing everything alone, in that moment of surrendering a relaxation happens in your being. It’s like when you suddenly realize that you are tensing your shoulders and you let them relax down. Ahhh. Yes. That’s right.

That feeling of relaxation arises from the humility vibration. When you surrender to a power beyond yourself, that activates the humility vibration, which gives you feelings of peace, calm, trust, and lighthearted curiosity. While enjoying the humility vibration you still take action, but you take action knowing that you are being assisted by Something Greater. “Let go and let God” does not mean that you lie down and quit, but rather it means that you let the Divine help you.

I’m reminded of that beautiful story about Jesus called “Footprints in the Sand” in which he tells the person that during their most difficult times he carried them. It is a good reminder that we are never alone. No matter what your religion or other cosmic belief system, there is Something Greater that supports you.

A Guided Imagery Relaxation Session With An Orange-Haired Guy In A White House

Visualizing myself giving a guided imagery relaxation session to an orange-haired guy in a white house…
Here is the imagined session…

And so… sitting in a comfortable position… and beginning to settle in… and beginning to settle down… closing your eyes… and bringing your awareness to your breathing… breathing in… and breathing out… and bringing your awareness to your body… noticing any areas that feel tense… and breathing out the tension… breathing in peace… and breathing out any tension… and bringing your awareness to your emotional self… noticing what you are feeling… and bringing your awareness to your thinking mind… noticing any thoughts passing through… and just allowing yourself to feel more and more comfortable…

And as your body settles deeper and deeper into the chair beneath you, feeling an effortless relaxation spreading, from your head… down to your toes… a warm, tingling energy flowing through your whole body… and noticing that your hands are becoming very warm and very heavy… and your feet are becoming very warm and very heavy… and now your conscious mind can just curl up in the corner and take a little rest… because your subconscious mind is listening carefully, to everything that’s being said… (Orange-haired guy is visibly beginning to calm some here.)

And now as I count from five down to zero, allowing yourself to become twice as relaxed with each number… and five, letting go of all tension… four, feeling more and more comfortable… three, feeling peace spreading through your body… two, releasing all worries… one, feeling your feet becoming heavier… and zero, feeling more relaxed than ever before… and beginning to open the channels… beginning to open the pathways… to your Deeper Intelligence… (Orange-haired guy is obviously going deeper now.)

Opening… releasing… breathing… feeling deeper and deeper peace inside your being… and beginning to feel an energy shimmering in the space around your body… sensing that energy as a bright beam of red light… and feeling the invitation in the air… and accepting the invitation to go for a ride in the beam… feeling so comfortable as the light beam carries you up…. floating up above this room… above this building… and rising up above the trees… looking down at the beautiful planet Earth… and floating, like in a dream, up towards the stars… feeling so safe and protected as the loving beam of red light carries you out into space*…. enjoying the vastness of the galaxies, the planets, the stars…

And taking all the time you need to rest and enjoy this time in space… seeing the beautiful sparkling lights… the colors of the nebulas… and noticing what you hear… and what you smell… and what you taste… and tuning in to how you feel… allowing your heart to open to the vastness of space… and going deeper into your own heart… and traveling back in time…. going back through all the years of your life… seeing all the experiences… the memories… the connections… the feelings… and just allowing any hurt feelings to arise in your awareness now… as the loving beam of light holds you in the beauty of the stars, just allowing any wounds from the past to arise in your awareness now… and as the memories of hurt feelings and wounds rise to the surface, just allowing them to be healed… (Tears are now flowing and flowing from the orange-haired guy’s eyes)…

… and noticing how, when one wound comes up to be healed, then all the other wounds also come up for healing… and so you can just allow all of the wounds from your past to be healed at once… right… now… just letting them all release, like cosmic starbursts… stars dissolving…. wounds healing and releasing… (Tears are still flowing, and now the orange-haired guy is sobbing)…

And just allowing those tears to flow… allowing the release… allowing the healing… and feeling a sweet love for your own precious heart… and extending that love out to all beings… understanding that all beings experience suffering and all beings seek happiness… loving yourself… and sending love to all beings… (The orange-haired guy sobs for a while, then becomes very calm, with a serene smile on his face.)

That’s right… enjoying the peace in every layer of your being… and noticing the lightness and happiness arising in your heart… and that lightness is spreading through your brain… through your body… feeling that lightness and happiness in every muscle, ever fibre, every tissue, and every cell… and understanding that some deep shifts are occurring in your being… and those shifts will continue to occur… as you go through your days… and as you sleep peacefully each night…

And in the coming weeks and days and months, those shifts will be obvious as you begin signing new kinds of legislation… finding yourself signing legislation that helps improve the lives of every person in your country, and of all people in all countries… legislation that ensures everyone has quality healthcare… legislation that raises taxes for the wealthiest two percent, and lowers taxes for the middle class and lower class… legislation that provides teachers with the same salaries as doctors… legislation that ensures every child is fed an organic plant-based lunch each day at school… legislation that provides young people with an affordable college education… legislation that protects the poor, the elderly, the sick, the disabled… legislation that protects the environment and encourages the use of sustainable energies… legislation that honors and supports military veterans… legislation that encourages peace and ends all wars… and as you find yourself signing these new kinds of legislation, you feel better and better about yourself… and you feel proud of your good works on the Earth… feeling empowered to be a better person, you inspire others to also become better people…

Still resting in your loving beam of red light out in the stars… beginning to understand how all people, and all creatures, are connected in one continuous web of energy and vibration… understanding how all beings are equal in the vastness of the universes… feeling your heart opening more and more… as the light beam carries you back through the galaxies… and down through the skies… down past the trees… and back into this building… once again sitting in your chair in this room… and taking a moment to integrate all the experiences you’ve had during this session… breathing in peace… and breathing out peace… loving yourself and loving all beings…

And now, I’m going to count from zero up to five, and when I reach the number five, you will open your eyes….
And zero, feeling the peace of the stars out in space…
One, feeling grateful for the healing of your wounds…
Two, remembering whatever you need to remember from this experience…
Three, feeling better and better about your good works on the Earth…
Four, coming back into full awareness of the outside world…
And five, opening your eyes, and noticing how you feel…
